Stanford Professional Publishing Course
2008 – Testimonial
In the summer of 2008, I was able to attend the
Stanford Professional Publishing Course thanks
to the generous support of Books & Booze. Without
this scholarship, my small nonprofit press wouldn’t
have been able to send me — and now that I know
what I would have been missing had I not gone,
I am doubly grateful.
The course was a whirlwind, a crash course, a
true immersion into every aspect of the business
I have loved for the past decade. Last year’s
theme focused on the digital revolution and how
it is forging significant and lasting changes
both in our industry and to the very form of the
book itself. For seven days, I found myself challenged
to rethink my assumptions about what we do as
publishers and how we see ourselves in the world
as purveyors of stories and information. The discussions,
both inside and outside the classrooms in which
we met each day, were intellectually stimulating
and mind-expanding. What a luxury to exchange
ideas with publishing innovators like Bob Miller
and Paul Saffo, and to be surrounded by like-minded
people from around the world, all grappling with
the same fundamentally shifting landscape, all
trying to navigate our way ahead of the curve.
Because my company functions in such a specific
niche (nonprofit, multicultural and bilingual
picture books), it was fascinating to extrapolate
lessons from how different publishers here and
abroad conduct business and try to make the right
calls in their own work.
The information and ideas I gathered over the
course of the week, as well as the personal and
professional contacts I made, continue to help
me in my work producing books that excite, inspire,
and bring joy, in whatever format they might take
in the future. As the industry continues to morph
in the face of new technologies and a very challenging
economic environment, I often find myself referring
back to my notes from the course and my reflections
from that week at Stanford. Thanks again to Books
& Booze for this wonderful, invaluable experience!
